The fruit is thin, but edible and bittersweet. I enjoy eating it as a snack on hikes. The pit however, is very large and highly toxic. Native peoples did eat it after processing. I wouldn't recommend trying that at all.
It can also be pruned into a hedge.
It is also a hostplant for a Western Tiger Swallowtail, though I have not seen a caterpillar yet.
