This MiniNature Reserve is named after coastal sagebrush, the preferred Chumash herb for smudging. Today, white sage is the more popular choice for this spiritual practice. It is now even a common find at farmers’ markets and botanicas. This unfortunately has led to the plant being poached, putting it at risk for becoming an endangered species.

We planted both plants in this garden in collaboration with the local botanica in order to promote sustainable and responsible harvest. We understand all people meditate, pray, and connect to nature in different ways. It is important to do so in a way that doesn’t destroy the environment, and also gives proper acknowledgement to Indigenous peoples.
