Families can often spotted here picking flowers, eating pan dulce from the nearby bakery, and watching bees forage for pollen. Many visitors of this garden note that a “maple-syrup” aroma fills the air. The bakery is often mistaken as the origin of this scent, but it actually comes from the fragrant everlasting. For the urban birdwatcher, this garden is our recommended location for finding yellow-rumped warblers, Anna’s hummingbird, and house finches.
This MiniNature Reserve is named after chaparral yucca. This relative of the agave is an important source of food and raw materials for the Chumash. It is also the only host plant for the yucca moth, which we hope to see soon during our annual Pollinator Surveys we hold at this space.
This garden was planted with the help of 28 volunteers in partnership with California Environmental Council Climate Stewards and the Pacifica High School Nature Club. It is our goal to one day set up a wildlife camera to capture birds feeding on sunflowers.
