What is a MiniNature Reserve?
A MiniNature Reserve (MNR) is a native garden planted by volunteers in a parkway, school, local park, or other small area. A MiniNature Reserve Installation is the event in which we do the planting.
What are we doing at this event?
Under the guidance of the guest leader, we will learn the significance of restoring Native plants to their Native habitat, how we can honor and have relation with them, and why Saticoy needs them.
Tasks include: digging holes, planting plants, raking, removing weeds and grass, and using gardening tools.
What should I bring with me?
-Gardening gloves
-Water
-Sun Protection
MiniNature Reserve will provide spare water, snacks, orange safety vests, and tools.
What should I expect?
- We will be outdoors for this event
- Dress comfortably and be ready to get dirty!
- To be patient and listen closely as we engage in this cultural exchange, there will be a lot of different elements moving at once notably with language, so keep an open heart.
- Before participating, you MUST sign a waiver, you MUST wear an orange safety vest (provided), and you MUST wear gloves (provided). We will be digging holes, putting plants in the ground, working with tools, & more.
- Learning about Chumash Culture
- We will have some snacks but we won’t provide lunch
Who is MiniNature Reserve?
MiniNature Reserve 501(c)(3) is a Gen Z-led urban native plant conservation group and community nursery. Our mission is to re-establish native plants in the urban environment. We do this by hosting volunteer hours at our nursery where people help grow native plants from seeds or cuttings. We then take those plants and put them in the ground in native gardens called MiniNature Reserves. We host Tending workshops in which we maintain
What is the age requirement for MiniNature Reserve Installations?
There is no age requirement.
Participants must be at least 18 years old in order to sign a waiver.
Participants under the age of 18 are welcome with the presence of their legal guardian/parent for the duration of the event.
Are there bathrooms at this event?
There are no restrooms on site, however, neighboring businesses may have an available public restroom. We highly encourage you to support our local small businesses.
What if there is rain forecasted?
In case of light rain, we have a limited number of rain ponchos. Heavy rain will be cancelled.
