What does "shtakuk" mean?
Most people know this plant by the name Chaparral Yucca. The Chumash peoples named this plant "shtakuk." To this day, the plant's stalk, fruits, seeds, and petals make up an important part of Chumash cuisine and cultural dishes. In addition, the leaves provide fibers for cordage. The cultural significance of this plant to the First Peoples is why we choose to dedicate this MNR to this very tall & beautiful plant.
